History of NBCAA
The Northern Bedford Community Athletic
Association (NBCAA), made
up of seventeen community members, was formed in November, 2001
to plan an athletic complex on school grounds.
The purpose of the project was to improve
the athletic facilities for the use and enjoyment of the community. To
quote a prominent alumni, "...establish an athletic facility they can all use
and be proud to call their own." The project was originally planned
to be completed in five
phases.
Phase
I - Phase I of the project will
include improving the current football field and bringing it up to playing
standards. It will include any drainage improvements that need to be made
and an irrigation well to irrigate the football field and surrounding playing
and practice fields. The practice field between the elementary school and
the football field is also to be improved. Phase I will also provide for
the installation of new goal posts and the necessary power and communications
leads to and from the field to the press box. The goal of Phase I is have
these objectives finished during the spring/summer of 2002.
Phase II -
Phase II will be the construction of an all-weather track, with a 4-foot high
fence around it. Also included in phase II will be a flagpole and scoreboard.
This phase of the project will be completed for the community to use the track
for jogging and walking this fall and for the track team to host track and field
meets in the spring of 2003.
Phase III -
Phase III goals for spring 2003 will be the construction of both home and
visitor side bleachers and lights. The lights will be available for use by the
community for walking or jogging in the evenings. Ticket booths will be
constructed during this phase along with exterior crowd control fencing.
Phase IV - Phase IV, to be completed during the summer of 2003, will be the construction
of the concession stands, restrooms, locker rooms, and storage building. At the
present time, the planning committee is looking at the possibility of putting
these projects under one roof for considerable costs savings on the necessary
service lines.
Phase V
- Phase V possibilities include the upgrading of the tennis courts for use by
the community. One of the courts will be converted to a basketball court. In
addition, during this phase there are currently plans to build a new baseball
field. The timeline and goals of this phase of the project will be re-evaluated
by the NBCAA as the project progresses.
The NBCAA members asked local community members and businesses for donations, not only of money, but also donations of labor, equipment, tools, materials or any combination of effort, in order to make this truly a community effort. Through all of the combined efforts donated the....
PANTHER COMMUNITY STADIUM BECAME A REALITY ON OCTOBER 16, 2003
The home bleachers are located on the west side of the field, facing the high school. They seat 1500 in 18 rows. Special accommodations have been made for the physically challenged. The visitors' bleachers on the opposite side of the field seat 750.
The blacktop surface of the track and jumping pits have been installed.
Mr. Brian Frederick's building trades classes constructed an 8 x 12 foot ticket building with overhangs, counters, and electrical wiring.
Mrs. Kay Kring's horticulture classes planted grass seed and designed the landscaping around the complex area.
Elementary, middle school, and high school faculty members did volunteer work on some of the construction and preparation.
A brief dedication ceremony was held during the opening night October 16, 2003. The NBC marching band gave an outstanding performance to begin the ceremony followed by the turning on of the lights by Coach Dan Foor who gained that honor by giving the highest bid at the Annual Dinner/Auction held in August of 2003. Michael Shaffer followed with welcoming remarks and introduced the members of the NBCAA committee.
Mr. Shaffer and Superintendent William Wade made several special recognitions. Comments were made from Larry Garlock, representative of the school board directors; a prayer of dedication; singing of the Alma Mater and national anthem; and an award of the field to students completed the dedication service.
A formal dedication program will take place next fall.
The first ever home game at the Panther Community Stadium began at 7:00 pm with Chestnut Ridge as the opposing team.
