The Celebrate Diversity Project is now beginning its 18th year. Celebrate Diversity! is sponsored by North American Communications, the Altoona Mirror, Penn State Altoona Campus, Reliance Bank and the Greater Altoona Jewish Federation. Participating Schools: Altoona Area, Hollidaysburg Area, The Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, Claysburg-Kimmel, Spring Cove, the Jewish Community School and Northern Bedford School Districts. Over 3000 students have participated in this program.

Diversity Project Mission:

Erase intolerance and raise awareness about attitudes of prejudice.

Where:

Penn State Altoona Campus - Community Arts Building, Devorris Downtown Center and Hollidaysburg Area Jr. High

Workshop Objectives include the following:

To increase awareness, communication and sensitivity towards all individuals and groups
To gather knowledge and appreciation for various cultures, creeds, and races
To share in the celebration of all individuals and groups of people

Commitment of Students:

Students will be expected to attend Saturday sessions which will be scheduled three times during the school year. It is important for students not to miss any of the sessions. They must attend at least two sessions to qualify for the trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
Students will participate in workshop activities and share their ideas.

Student Day I

Date: Saturday, October 1, 2011
Location: Penn State-Altoona Campus - Community Arts Center
Time: 8:30 a.m. Registration - 9:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m. Program
Description: The students, with their teachers, will learn about and experience prejudice, discrimination and living with disabilities through a series of exercises, presentations, a video and activities.
Lunch is provided.

Student Day II

Date: Saturday, December 3, 2011
Location: Penn State-Altoona Campus Devorris Downtown Center and various religious institutions.
Time: 8:30 a.m. Registration - 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Program
Description: The students will travel to a synagogue, two churches and cathedral in the morning and return to the Devorris Center in the afternoon for additional presentations and to discuss differences and similarities in religions.
Lunch is provided.

Student Day III

Date: Saturday, March 24, 2012
Location: Hollidaysburg Area Junior High School
Time: Registration: 8:30 a.m. Program: 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m.
Description: The students will learn about hate groups and hate crimes from a guest speaker, will view a film about the Holocaust and will conclude with discussions and a group activity.
Lunch is provided.

Field Trip

Date: Monday, April 30, 2012
Location: Wal-Mart Plaza Parking Lot
Time: 6:00 a.m. Buses begin to load, 6:30 a.m. Buses Depart - Returns approximately 7:00-8:00 p.m.
Description: The students will take a field trip to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC and visit some of the monuments.
