Individual counseling occurs when students experience problems that interfere with their ability to be successful in school. These problems could be academic, social, behavioral or situational and are very common in childhood. Sometimes kids have the coping skills to move through the problems without incident, sometimes they need some help. My job is to help.
I love talking with kids and helping them come up with creative ways to solve problems. Sometimes, a learned behavior may be getting in the way of their success, and in those cases, I may need to meet with children more than once to help them develop more effective strategies. When at all possible, meeting times are pre-arranged with the classroom teacher in an effort to minimize impact on academics.
Individual counseling takes place any time a student, parent, teacher or staff refers the student. Stud
ents have access to the counselor through a mailbox in the lobby of the school or through their classroom teacher. To participate in a planned program of counseling, parent permission is required.
